Persian Nights by Ranna McNeil

Cast crystal & glass reliquaries by Ranna McNeil for FUNERIA®

Ranna McNeil has twice won the Excellence in Glass Award, sponsored in 2001 and 2003 by the ACGA (Association of Clay and Glass Artists of No. California). Her petite cast crystal artworks seem to emanate a light and life force all their own, as though they were fine, weighty gemstones shimmering in a clear pool of water and only waiting to be discovered.

As reliquary vessels, these objects might hold a small portion of ashes, but they also serve beautifully as containers for small items that were part of a loved one’s history—a wedding ring or other jewelry, as a place to keep a dried flower from a special garden or arrangement, or a shell or pebble of unique significance. In this way, they honor experiences shared. They are a place in which memories of love abide.

Each of the reliquaries is created in a cire perdue process, which is the ancient form of lost wax casting (also used in bronze casting, though in these examples, molten glass displaces the wax rather than bronze).
